Softening an edge:

1) Select the area you want to crop out

2) copy and paste that to a new layer

NOTICE THE HARD CHOPPY EDGES ON THE IMAGE

3) using the majic wand tool select everything but the item you cut out... there should now be a ring around the image you cut out from before

4) go to select, and then Inverse

5) go to select, and then modify, and then contract,

(depending on image size this will vary, but if your using a web based image 2-5 pixels should be a good range) you should see the selected area jump in a bit on your image

6) go to select and then modify, and then feather,

(again depending on the size of the image this will vary, again if your using a web based image a range of 3-10 pixels should work)

7) hit crtl-c (copy)

8) hit crtl-v (paste)

9) click on the eye of the old layer to make it invisible, you should see a nice soft edge to the image now.

I OVERDID THE FEATHER SO THAT YOU COULD SEE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE FIRST AND  THE FEATHERED EDGE IMAGE,
